You are losing money. If you aren’t using a cashback app then you are leaving 💰free💰 (yes, really free!) money on the table. I have used each of the following apps, and let me tell you, the bonuses add up over time. It won’t be an immediate windfall, but once you’re able to cash out your first few gift cards, or direct to Paypal, made by purchases you were *already going to make*, it feels amazing. I was even able to use gift cards for Christmas shopping this past year, which felt like the ultimate life hack! Plus some of these are even stackable for extra rewards!
What’s a cashback app? Whether you’re grabbing groceries, filling up your gas tank, or splurging on a weekend getaway, cashback apps help you earn money back on your everyday purchases. It’s like getting paid to shop! In this article, we’ll cover the best cashback apps to maximize your savings, plus tips on stacking rewards for even bigger returns.
💼 Best Overall Cashback Apps
📱 1. Rakuten (Sign up and get a $30 bonus)

- How it works: Shop through the Rakuten app or browser extension to earn cashback from thousands of retailers. Once the browser extension is installed, it will automatically pop up on your screen when shopping, asking if you want to activate cash back.
- Best for: Online shopping, especially during sales events.
- Payout: Quarterly via PayPal or check.
- Bonus: Get a $30 sign-up bonus after your first purchase!
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 4/5 Stars. Once it’s set up as a browser extension or via app, it finds savings. It only loses a point due to the fact you have to remember to shop via the app on your phone which takes a little re-wiring of your shopping habits. Also, if you are using the browser extension and have an ad-blocker, you will have to disable it while shopping.
Thoughts: Rakuten has some of the biggest rewards back that I’ve seen for cashback apps. 14% for Walmart, 16% for Macy’s and 11% for Target. If you shop at these places frequently online, then those rewards will add up quickly. Their cash-out feature is also incredibly easy to navigate, with check or PayPal options.
💼 2. Ibotta (Join and get a $10 bonus)
- Earn: Ibotta gives cashback on groceries with receipt uploads or loyalty card linking. Simple and quick cashback rewards. Allows you to automatically link your accounts like Walmart and Target, and more, so you don’t have to remember to upload the physical receipts.
- Best for: Walmart, Target, and more.
- Payout: PayPal, gift cards, or bank deposit.
- Bonus: $10 welcome bonus.
💰 Best Cashback Apps for Dining and Gas
🍔 3. Upside (Get 15¢/gal bonus)
- How it works: When you sign up with Upside, you choose what gas grade you normally use, like 87 Regular, Premium 93, etc. Earn cashback on gas, groceries, and dining by checking in through the app. You do have to have location services turned on for the app for use.
- Best for: Saving on fuel and dining out. Check the app before going out and filling your tank. It uses location to find the closest and best gas deals.
- Payout: PayPal or gift cards.
- Bonus: Earn 15¢/gallon cashback on your first fill-up.
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 5/5 Stars. Once the app is set up, simply open it to view offers before going grocery shopping or filling up your tank. It has some of the highest cash back on grocery shopping I’ve seen across apps. My local grocery store right now has a 23% cashback, and my local gas station is 30 cents a gallon in cashback. Plus, a 10% cash back when you claim a restaurant or grocery store offer and spend $10. A very easy way to stack some rewards!
Who doesn’t love free gas? This app is a really cool concept. I always open it before going and getting gas because there are often 30-cent cash back offers. These add up quickly if you commute to work! I haven’t used it on a road trip yet, but I can absolutely see just stacking up rewards on one! Not to mention the automatic fuel savings the app also offers.
🚀 Best Cashback Browser Extensions
🖥️ 4. Honey (Join for free)
- How it works: Honey finds and applies coupon codes and gives you Honey Gold points to redeem for gift cards.
- Best for: Automatically saving on online purchases.
- Payout: Gift cards.
- Bonus: Earn Honey Gold on eligible purchases.
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 5/5 Stars. Once the browser is set up it’s incredibly easy to use. When shopping it will automatically pop up on checkout pages and offer to try its list of promo codes automatically, and will find the one with the most savings. If it can’t find a good promo code you will still get some cashback option, but usually much lower than somewhere like Rakuten, think 1-5%.
I have been using Honey since 2017 (how has it been 8 years?) and have cashed out countless times. It is easy to use, and the rewards are solid. You can cash out to PayPal or for a long list of gift cards. I like to use this one to gather gift cards for use around Christmas time, taking some of the pressure off my wallet for gift shopping.
💻 5. Capital One Shopping (Try now)
- How it works: Capital One Shopping Automatically applies coupon codes and tracks price drops.
- Best for: Price comparisons and deal tracking.
- Payout: Gift cards or cashback rewards directly to your card.
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 5/5 Stars. Once the browser is set up it’s incredibly easy to use. It works in the same way as Honey, where when shopping it will automatically pop up on checkout pages and offer to try its list of promo codes automatically, and will find the one with the most savings. You will also get some sort of cashback option, but usually much lower than somewhere like Rakuten, think 1-3%.
I’ve used this for a few years now and it is great, it operates in the same way as Honey but the rewards go directly to your Capital One card. From there you can apply it as a statement credit on your card, or cash out for any of the Capital One rewards. I love this browser extension and you can even stack it with Honey if you do it in the correct order.
🛎️ Best Cashback Apps for Groceries
🛒 6. Fetch Rewards (Join and get 2,000 points)
- How it works: Fetch lets you scan receipts from any store to earn points for gift cards. Play their linked games for more points.
- Best for: Simple and fast receipt scanning. It also has a suite of games you can play for points. I have completed three of the games and earned about $50 in Target gift cards from playing their mobile apps.
- Payout: Gift cards (Amazon, Target, Starbucks, etc).
- Bonus: Get 2,000 points when you scan your first receipt.
- Some stores are available online, so be sure to check which ones are available.
- Payout: Gift cards
- Bonus: Get a $5 gift card when you scan your first receipt.
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 5/5 Stars. This one is straightforward once you download the app and sign up. It allows you to link your Amazon, Walmart, Target, and your email to automatically pull your digital receipts so you get points for online shopping. It also features a very easy receipt upload option and often offers bonuses for purchasing items from specific brands.
This one is great if you want to dedicate some time to playing their mobile apps, that was the fastest way I was able to get enough points to cash out a 50 gift card. It won’t be a windfall uploading receipts, but they do add up over time. Plus, it’s fun watching the points grow.
🛒 7. Shopkick (Download free)
- How it works: Shopkick has you earn points (“kicks”) for visiting stores, scanning items, and making purchases. You get kicks for just walking through the door. More kicks for scanning with the Shopkick app, and the most kicks for scanning a receipt.
- Best for: Walking in a store, scanning some things with the app, and then scanning your receipt. You do have to have location services turned on for the app for use. It does work for some online stores, so be sure to check which stores are available.
- Payout: Gift cards.
- Bonus: Get a $5 gift card when you scan your first receipt.
- Ease of use: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – 4/5 Stars. This one is a little more interactive than the apps running in the background that just apply promo codes or give automatic rewards. It does feel a little like a treasure hunt walking around, finding stores that give you kicks, and scanning throughout the store. It also has an option to watch videos for kicks.
